Since the advent of Bitcoin, "who is Satoshi Nakamoto" has become an unsolved mystery on the internet, and now this enigma has been unveiled in a documentary...
On October 8th at 9 PM Eastern Time, "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" by Cullen Hoback premiered on HBO, suggesting that Peter Todd, an early Bitcoin developer, is the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
However, the protagonist Todd quickly denied on X that he is Nakamoto, calling Hoback's claims "nonsense."
It is worth mentioning that for a long time, Nakamoto's identity has been a hot topic of discussion. Some people say that if Nakamoto is still alive, he might control as many as 680,000 Bitcoins, worth about $45 billion. Despite speculation for over a decade, Nakamoto's identity has remained anonymous, with some guessing he is an individual and others guessing he is a group of people.
The director of this film, Hoback, is also a master of uncovering secrets. He previously filmed the documentary series "Q: Into the Storm," which investigated the Q Anon conspiracy theory and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2021.
"Satoshi Nakamoto" Clues! Who is Peter Todd?
Hoback pieced together old and new clues and then confronted Todd and another key suspect, Blockstream founder Adam Back, with evidence to reach this conclusion. One of the pieces of evidence he relied on was a post Todd made on a Bitcoin message board in 2010, which he believes is highly likely to have been written by "Satoshi Nakamoto."

At the end of the documentary, Hoback asked Todd, "It seems you had such a deep insight into Bitcoin at the time?" Todd replied, "Well, yes, I am Nakamoto."
Todd, a Canadian, has been writing code for Bitcoin since 2012 and calls himself a "crypto timer" on the X platform. He is also the founder of OpenTimestamps, an open-source project dedicated to providing a standard format for blockchain timestamps.Todd, 39 years old, graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. When the famous Bitcoin white paper was completed, he was only 23 years old, and the white paper first outlined the vision of a decentralized currency system. Todd previously stated in a podcast that he was about 15 years old when he first communicated with key influencers in the crypto field (i.e., cypherpunks).
In addition, Todd participated in the so-called "Bitcoin 2.0" projects, including Counterparty, Mastercoin, and Colored Coins, and in 2016, he participated in the launch of the privacy coin zcash with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, even publicly destroying the computer used to create the cryptocurrency.
However, the protagonist Todd quickly denied this statement on X, claiming that Hoback was talking "nonsense."
The release of this documentary has sparked a lot of criticism online, with many people in the crypto community questioning the conclusions of the film. Some believe that the evidence provided in the documentary is not sufficient to conclusively prove a connection between Todd and Satoshi Nakamoto.
Nic Carter, founding partner of Castle Island Ventures, said:
From a technical standpoint, he is one of the most important Bitcoin figures. He has known Todd since 2017, and generally speaking, people believe that his views on Bitcoin are very important. But I am sure Todd is not Satoshi Nakamoto, partly because the creator of Bitcoin has a deep understanding of cryptography and digital cash systems.
There is no greater mystery in history than this. It is claimed that Satoshi Nakamoto owns a large number of Bitcoin tokens, and he has successfully done this, which is really amazing.
